Obituary, The Minden Press-Herald, Minden, La., September 7, 1976
Frank H. Coffee
Frank Hurley Coffee, 66, died Saturday at his residence following a brief illness.
Coffee was a retired Air Force veteran and a member of the Shreveport VFW and
the Shreveport Elks Club.
He had lived in Avinger, Texas for the past 11 years.
Services were held Monday at 2 p.m. in the Rose-Neath Chapel in Minden with Dr.
Ronald Prince officiating. Burial was in the Minden Cemetery.
He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Shannon Coffee of Avinger, Tex.; his mother,
Mrs. A. L. Coffee of Minden; one son Jack Coffee of Baton Rouge; one daughter,
Mary Elizabeth Coffee of Shreveport; two brothers, Harry Coffee and Dr. James
Coffee of Baton Rouge; two sisters, Ruby Coffee of Shreveport and Mrs. Myra Lee
Rea of Minden.
Pallbearers were John Fort, Crichton McCrary, Douglas McCrary, Linwood Inabnett,
Turner Almond, Pat McCrary, Carlos Green, Carlton Frazier, and Cleve Rea.
He was buried in Sep 1976 in City Cemetery, Minden, Webster Parish, LA.802 In addition to Helen and other
wives listed in this genealogy, Frank was married at least five more times. I
recall visiting him in Shreveport in about 1957 and found him working in National
Shirt Shop, a men's clothing store, He was married to a lady named Jacqueline.
At the time of his death he was married to a lady named Shannon. I do not believe
there were any children from either of these marriages. Webster Parish records
show that at one time Frank owned the Tri-State Novelty Company, a juke box
vendor, in Minden.
A search of court house records in Cass County did not reveal any business license
(Index to Assumed Names, 1971 forward) marriage record or other information about
Frank with the exception of probate documents prepared upon his death.
Frank's death certificate was recorded in Jefferson, Marion County, because he
was taken from his residence in Cass County to the nearest hospital which was
in Jefferson. Jefferson and Avinger are only a few miles apart. Frank's death
certificate recorded his social security number as 575-03-1416. G. E. Haggard
and Son Funeral Home, Inc. in Marion County, handled the arrangements.
In a 1995 exchange of letters with Fred McKenzie, author of the book Avinger
Texas USA (M&M Press, Rt. 1, Box 404, Avinger, Texas 75630), I was told that
Frank was a barber and that he had a shop near the beauty shop of Shannon Burns
Terry. I was unable to locate a business license for either person at the courthouse
in Avinger. Frank Hurley COFFEE and Helen MCCORMICK were married on Apr 30,
1934 in Benton, Bossier Parish, LA.803

MCCORMICK was born about 1910. Frank and Helen McCormack marriage
license was recorded at the courthouse in Benton, parish seat of Bossier Parish,

a divorce record, found recorded at the court house in Baton Rouge indicates
that Helen had been previously married to Peter Kolb, and at least one child,
Barbara Ellen, had been born from that marriage. Witnesses to Frank's marriage
were Kathryn L. Samuel and J. H. Maxey.
Frank and Helen initially resided in Caddo Parish, and later moved to Webster

Middle daughter of Archie and Lillian. Velma was tall, approximately 5' 6"
and had auburn hair. She was a classic beauty and was always well groomed.
I rarely remember seeing her with uncombed hair or without makeup. She was an
accomplished seamstress and in her younger years made most of her own clothes,
including suits.
On Thursday, May 10, 1934, the State-Times in Baton Rouge, Louisiana published
the names of those children in East Baton Rouge Parish which had won State Spelling
Certificates in tests held in the previous month. Velma was listed as one of
