5. Hezekiah W.
(Kai) BISHOP was born on Jan 28, 1808 in Georgia.27,28,29 He appeared in the census in 1830 in Copiah Co., MS.30 He appeared in Copiah Co., MS
civil records in Oct 1837 when he was declared the winner in the
election for Clerk of the Probate Court of Copiah County, Mississippi. At about
the same time, he was appointed guardian of the minor heirs of the deceased Alfred
Cato. The court minutes for the October, 1837 term, page 225, shows that Hezekiah
W. Bishop took charge of the children, Octava, Ludia, Narcissa, Franklin P.,
Eliza Ann, Emily and Rey after entering a bond in the amount of fourteen hundred
dollars, with Isac W. Lester and Rowland Johnson as securities.
He appeared in the census in 1840 in Copiah Co., MS.31 He died before 1887 in Union Co., AR.32,33 Kelly Parks
writes that H. W. Bishop patented 39 acres in Copiah County on 3 December 1832.
Also, on 7 December 1832, a deed from H. W. Bishop to F. W. Hubert, land N/2
E/2 NW/4 S19, T10, R8E. 2 December 1835, bought two lots in the town of Gallatin
(deed book D, p455). 18 August 1836, S/2 of lots 27 and 28 on the southern border
of the town of Gallatin, southwest corner, sold to Abraham Harvey (deed book
B, p65). 23 August 1836, N/2 of same lots sold to Henry Howard (Deed book #,
p81). H.W. Bishop sold to Abraham Harvey land in the S/2 W/2 SW/4 S18 T9N R8E,
12 January 1837. S/2 NW/4 NW/4 NW/4 and SE/4 NE/4 of S5, T10N, R8E, 117 acres
sold to Buckner Harris (deed book H, p60) 1838.
Kelly also writes that in March, 1840, H.W. Bishop and others apparently sued
by David M. Masie. Two slaves were sold for $705 as part of the settlement.
Dr. Walker writes in his Ancestory of Hezekiah that the slaves referred to were
sold at auction with all interest of Hezekiah being transferred to William Bishop.
Hezekiah served as Justice of the Peace in Copiah County and possibly as Clerk
of the Probate Court. He and his wife appear to have left that county late in
1840 and moved directly to Union Co., AR. He appears on the 1841 tax roll for
that county and is later recorded there in 1843 and 1849 but may have resided
from time to time in Caliborne Parish, LA. From 1850 to 1864 he is found in
Union County.
Hezekiah W. (Kai) BISHOP and Martha MILLICAN were married on Mar 15, 1827
in Lawrence Co., MS.34,35

They were divorced on Oct 18, 1842 in Union Co., AR. Adultery on
the part of Hezekiah W. Bishop was claimed by Martha as grounds for the divorce.
Child support of two hundred fifty dollars per year was assessed "...so
long as the children shall remain and live with..." Martha. H. W. was required
to give bond and security for the "...faithful payment of the said sum of
money..." (Walker, citing Chancery Court record A & B, Union Co., AR,
pps14, 15 and 20)
Note: This might explain the "black" female, age 19, enumerated as
a daughter in the Hezekiah and Octavia Cato Bishop household in the 1880 Minden,
Webster Parish, LA federal census. Martha MILLICAN
was born about 1810 in Georgia. She appeared in the census on Nov
11, 1850 in Union Co., AR, enumerated with the Leroy Bishop family.
She appeared in the census on Sep 18, 1860 in Union Co., AR, enumerated in household
of son Leroy Bishop. She appeared in the census in 1870 in Union
Co., AR, enumerated at age 61 in household of her daughter, Eliza Carmen..
She appeared in the census in 1880 in Union Co., AR, enumerated at age 69 years
in household of her daughter, Eliza Carmen.. Hezekiah W. (Kai) BISHOP
and Martha MILLICAN had the following children:
