Fifth Generation
109. Jasper Runch
BISHOP was born in Mar 1832 in Old Gallatin, Copiah Co., MS.177 He died before Feb 1911 in
Arkansas.177 This may be
the J. R. Bishop appearing in the 1860 Union Co., AR census record. The family
is listed in Tubal Twp., Atlanta Post Office; written page no. 99, printed page
309, dwelling 662, family 611; J. R. Bishop, 29, male, born MS; Emily, 30, born
GA; H.H., 5, male, born AR; Amanda, 4, born AR; Leroy, 2, born AR; Marshall,
1, born AR. Also in the family is J. F. Brooks, 25, male, laborer, born GA,
and C.D. Puckett, 21, male, laborer, born MS.
There is enumerated In the 1850 Union Co. census record, Franklin Twp., with
the Leroy Bishop family a Sarah Puckett, 16 year old, born MS. Leroy and family
also appear in the Union Co., Tubal Twp., AR 1860 census, written page 99, printed
page 309, dwelling 661, family 610. Included are Jane, age 28, born MS; Melissa,
10, born AR; Albert, 6/12, born AR, and Martha Bishop, 57, born GA. Just next
door to Leroy is Sarah Bishop, 25, born MS; James, 6, born LA; Eliza, 3, born
AR, and Charles, age 6/12, born AR.
Just a few farms up from Sarah and Leroy, on written page 98, printed page 309,
dwelling 652, family 600, is enumerated the family of H. W. Bishop, 57, farmer,
born GA; J. H. Bishop, 35, female, born AL; A. G. Bishop, 13, male, born LA;
Sarah Bishop, 11, born AR; W. W. Bishop, 8, male, born AR; H. W. Bishop, 6, male,
born AR. Same dwelling, family 601 is Eliza Martin, 26, born MS; Mary Martin,
9, born AR, Joseph Martin, 7, born AR and J. R. Wilhelm,, 29, male, laborer,
born PA
This is probably more than mere coincidence, making it probable that J. R. Bishop
is related somehow to Leroy, that the Sarah Puckett is somehow related to C.D.
Puckett, and that they are all related to the H.W. Bishop family..
From Tom Walker, Feb. 9, 2003:
Jasper R. Bishop, who almost always went by his initials, J. R., was listed in
various census records as a farmer and a teacher. Without checking my records,
it is my memory that he was listed in, at least, the 1900 Census as a lawyer.
An interesting person. Early, a farmer. Then, a teacher. My grandfather, Thad
Bishop (by the way erroneously listed as Thaddeus in the 1880 Census), remembered
his Uncle Jasper quite well. In fact, when my grandfather was quite young, Uncle
Jasper was his pastor at New Hope Baptist Church, Union County, Arkansas. Uncle
Jasper was ordained to the Baptist Ministry in about 1882 at the Bethlehem Baptist
Church that was a few miles north and west of the New Hope Community where my
grandfather lived. My grandfather (born 2 May 1872) was about ten years old
when his Uncle Jasper was ordained. One of the descendents of Jasper R. Bishop
who denies vehemently that his ancestor, Jasper R. Bishop, was a Baptist Minister
uses as one of his arguments that although Jasper R. Bishop was the census enumerator,
he never listed himself as a preacher. One must only know Baptist history to
understand! Baptist of that day and time did not consider being a preacher to
be a profession; rather, it was a "Calling." For many years, J. R.
Bishop lived in Junction City, Arkansas; practiced law there; was a member of
the Junction City (now) First Baptist Church. He was listed on church rolls
over the years as Rev. J. R. Bishop, regularly represented the Junction City
Church at the annual meetings of the local Baptist association and regularly
represented the Junction City Church at the annual meetings of the Arkansas Baptist
State Convention. He pastored several different churches in Arkansas and in Louisiana.
