On the website, you will see references to a Marvin Coffey. Marvin can be reached at: coffey@sou.edu. Marvin has studied the North Carolina Coffey's quite a bit; I just received a copy of a book he wrote about them. He has also studied the connection to Ireland.

A third source has been Linda Roberts at: lkroberts@worldnet.att.net Linda provided me with quite a bit of info from census records, and also showed me how to access the database that contains the land patents. At that site you can search by either name or accession number. James Sylvester Coffey's land patent is accession number IN3020___.042

A fourth source has been Claudia Cox Welton She provided the information on James Wilford Coffey. She refers to James as James C. Coffey.

I feel it is OK for me to pass these email addresses along to you, because they are posted on the web in relation to Coffey genealogy research.

A fifth source is information that my mother put together about the Franklin Pierce Coffey line. I have basically copied what she provided me, with some minor updating. My mother and father live in Indianapolis. If someone has a question for them, they should contact me.

James Sylvester Coffey was born about 1812 in North Carolina. Best guess is he was a descendent of Edward Coffey who moved to North Carolina from Ireland. One of Edward's daughters was named Annister. She was born about 1708. She had an illegitimate (referred to as "base" ) child named James who might be the grandfather (or great-grandfather) of James Sylvester Coffey. James Sylvester Coffey might have come from Stokes County in North Carolina. There are much better records for the rest of the North Carolina Coffeys than for James.

In 1837, James Sylvester Coffey married Sarah Carter in Shelby County Indiana. Sarah was also born in North Carolina. Her father was Wilford Carter. Her mother might have been named Catharine and she might have had a sister named Nancy. Also in 1837, James Sylvester bought 40 acres of farmland in Shelby County. A copy of the land patent is attached. It is signed by Martin Van Buren.

Franklin Pierce Coffey was married twice. The first was to Laura B. Cartwright on March 5, 1874. She passed away on Feb 4, 1875. The second was to Nancy Sills on May 12, 1878.

John M. Coffey and a Lewis Coffey were also in Shelby County in the early 1800's. Lewis was 11 years younger than James and lived with James family at the time of the 1850 census. Maybe Lewis was brother of James? John M. Coffey married Minerva Carter and was the administrator of a will for a Thomas Carter. Maybe they were related to Sarah Carter? Maybe he was related to James Sylvester Coffey?

Franklin Pierce, born Sept. 6, 1952 and died June 24, 1922. He married Nancy Ellen Sills on May 12, 1878. Nancy was born Feb. 14,1857 and died Sept. 29, 1936. Their children:

William Frank married Anna Thomason Oct. 1922. Had no children.
Fannie married George Fossey March 1, 1920. They had one son George Jr. George Fossey died June 21, 1948. George Jr. was born Aug. 24, 1921.
He married Anna Feb. 14p 1942 and divorced after the war. He served in World War 11. He later married Donna and they have three children. One is adopted. His oldest son is named Gary and lives in northern In.
Louie married Orval Fritts. He died in 1955. She married Glenn Hinshaw May 29 1966. They had no children. Glenn died Feb.10,1982
John Coffey's children:
Clarice married Charles Huffman in 1942 and divorced and married James Flora in 1944. They had three children, Kathy born 1949, John born July 1953 and William born August 1956.
Doris married Bud Gerhardt in 1942. Divorced and married Bob Rairdon in 1947. Divorced and married Keith Taylor in 1952.
They had one son Keith.Jr. who was born in Nov. 1952.
Robert married Bennie Liebrock in 1955 and she died in 1956. later married Julie Linder in 1972.
Henry and Robert both served in World War 11.

Henry Franklin Coffey married Rosamond Helen Loesch June 28, 1941.

had a high fever when a child and left her deaf. I think she was age 4. Iva married and had one son.
Rose married Roscoe Barker and they had one daughter who died shortly after birth.
William married Mame and they had two daughters, Anne and Elnora. Both are deceased. Anna had one son and Elnora two-tone a girl and one son. Ida married a Fielder and both are deceased. They had a daughter who married a Lumley and she had one son Robert and one daughter.
