Descendants of John (?) Coffee

Presented by Linda Roberts

Generation No. 1

1. JOHN (?)1
COFFEE died Aft. 1745 in Poss. Prince Georges Co, MD. He married REBECCA ? Bef. 1724.

Notes for JOHN (?) COFFEE:
"Prince George's Parish records show that a John Coffee and his wife Rebecca had three children: Mary, born 2 Sept 1724, James, born 18 Nov 1727, and Phillip, born 14 April 1730." This could be our Philip, but not sure.

That would mean that Philip was 33 years old when he died.

I have contacted the Historian of the All Saints Church, however, I have not heard back from him. My friend is going to Prince George Co. to do some other research next week, and she is going to see what she can find about John and Rebecca. Let me know what you think about that info. Take care, Jackie

After I e-mailed you today, I just had to dig out my stuff, I knew there was something else that pointed to John as the father of James and Philip.

In Prince George's Land Record Book Page 272 there is a lease recorded at the request of John Coffee Mar 28, 1745.......This lease starts today, and is for and during the natural life of John Coffee himself, and for and during the natural life of James Coffee, son of John Coffee, and for and during the natual life of Phillip Coffee, son of the sd John Coffee, all now living.......SCORE!

Also, in the Cook Family paper by Eleanor M.V. Cook 1993, she discusses that John Cook and Ambrose Cook were somehow related to John Coffee. On Sept 12 1728, John Coffee, planter executed a deed, in consideration of "the love and affection I have for my son-in-law Ambrose Cooke" giving him a dark grey mare (PG Deeds M,f.328). However, she goes on to discuss John's daughter Mary not being probable as Ambrose Cooke's wife, because of the great age difference. Later she discusses the estate of Ambrose and also John Cook, in which Sarah Cook and John D. Coffee are listed as kindred for both men, which leads to the possibility that Sarah Cook may have been Philip's younger sister, which at that time, would have justified Philip referring to Ambrose as a son-in-law. Not sure. But at any rate, we know now that Philip and James' father is John D. Coffee. Whew!

Is Cloe Coffee married to John Cook.
Which James Coffee is this a brother or a son? I am going to guess a son..

Children of PHILLIP COFFEE and ESTHER DOWDEN are:
  1. i.CLOE3 COFFEE.

Notes for CLOE COFFEE:
Possibly married to John Cook??? See Philip Probate Record

I also found a marriage record for a Cloe Coffee to a Hezekiah Roberts in Montgomery Co, Md dated 7/7/1778???? Could this be the Hezekiah that is the son of James Roberts. The coincidences are really running between the Roberts and Coffee and Dowden families.

  1. ii.JAMES COFFEE.
  2. JAMES2 COFFEE (JOHN (?)1) was born November 18, 1727. He married ANN DOWDEN Bef. 1760, daughter of MICHAEL DOWDEN and RACHEL BRYAN.

Notes for JAMES COFFEE:
At the present time it is speculation that John Dowden Coffee is the son of James Coffee. Primarily based on the fact that James's wife is a Dowden. It is possible that he is the son of Phillip; however, he is not listed in Phillip's will as a son.

I have, to date, not found a will for James.

Coffey, James MD FREDERICK CO. ALL SAINTS PARISH 125 1756

Note: Phillip is listed as Coffee and James as Coffey

There is a list of debts for Lawrence Owen in Frederick Co, MD 3/1762 in which the names John Coffee, Thomas Dowden, Dr. Richard Cooke, Wm. Cooke, Michael Dowden, Ashford Dowden and John Cooke Esq. appear.

If certainly makes you wonder about another John Coffee in the family about the time of James and Phillip.

Notes for ANN DOWDEN:
Not sure in what order her marriages were????She is also supposed to have married a Basil Roberts but I am not sure when. Could this be the Basil Roberts that is the son of James and Mary Roberts???

Child of JAMES COFFEE and ANN DOWDEN is:
  1. i.JOHN DOWDEN3 COFFEE, b. November 10, 1760; d. August 23, 1822, Frederick Co, MD at Mt. Olivet Cemetery.

Generation No. 3

4. JOHN DOWDEN3
COFFEE (JAMES2, JOHN (?)1) was born November 10, 1760, and died August 23, 1822 in Frederick Co, MD at Mt. Olivet Cemetery. He married DARCUS ROBERTS December 21, 1785 in Frederick Co, MD, daughter of JAMES ROBERTS and MARY ?. She was born February 07, 1769, and died May 29, 1842 in Frederick Co, MD at Mt. Olivet Cemetery.

Notes for JOHN DOWDEN COFFEE:
Family data taken from family bible as interpreted by Kathy Leach.

John Dowden Coffee and Dorcas are buried at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Frederick Co, MD as indicated by the Frederick Co Historical Society Records.

The 1790 census for Montgomery Co., MD shows the following information:
Coffee, John D. 1 free white male of 16 years and upward; 3 free white males under 16 years; 1 free white female and 3 slaves. This is consistent with the records shown in the bible, presuming John A. was already born.

There is a list of debts for Lawrence Owen in Frederick Co, MD 3/1762 in which the names John Coffee, Thomas Dowden, Dr. Richard Cooke, Wm. Cooke, Michael Dowden, Ashford Dowden and John Cooke Esq. appear.

If certainly makes you wonder about another John Coffee in the family about the time of James and Phillip

Notes for DARCUS ROBERTS:
Name spelling sometimes looks like Dorcas and sometimes Darcus. Presuming spelling is Darcus because of granddaughter's name.

Children of JOHN COFFEE and DARCUS ROBERTS are:
  1. i.PHILIP4 COFFEE, b. October 20, 1786.

Notes for PHILIP COFFEE:
Could have also been born on 10/29/1786???
  1. ii.JAMES COFFEE, b. October 03, 1788.

Notes for JAMES COFFEE:
Bible says born about 2pm in the evening.
Bible also says a James died 5/17 (no year) interpreted as being about 4am prior to 1808.

  1. iii.JOHN A. COFFEE, b. June 03, 1790.

Notes for JOHN A. COFFEE:
Family bible says born about midnight.

  1. iv.CHLOE R. COFFEE, b. October 19, 1792.

  2. vi.MARY ANN COFFEE, b. August 30, 1799; m. ? SHULLBERG.

Notes for MARY ANN COFFEE:
Family bible say born about 2am.

Rumors are that she married a Shullsburg and moved to Wisconsin prior to the 1850 census. Her brother Robert is also supposed to have gone there. Need to check 1850 census index in Wisconsin to see if I can spot them there.

  1. vii.COVENTON COFFEE, b. October 15, 1800.
  2. viii.CHARLES GRANDISON COFFEE, b. August 26, 1803; d. January 01, 1847, IL.

Notes for JAMES A. COFFEE:
There is more than one James shown born to them. It is presumed that the earlier James died early in life and this James was renamed with an important family name. It is also assumed that James and Robert(s) Coffee are twins.

According to their marriage certificate (I have a copy) they were married at the home of Mrs. Ann Cain (a close neighbor of Charles Grandison Coffee) by Adam McCool.

Presume she is dead or gone before 1847 probate record on Charles Grandison Coffee in which he makes Horatio his children's guardian.
